How To Dress Like an It Girl

HOW TO DRESS LIKE AN IT GIRL

We all see photos of it-girls like Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, and even Blake Lively (who still looks bangin’ as a mom) and we can’t help but wonder how exactly they manage to look perfectly styled all the time. While I’m sure there’s a mile long list of trade secrets that could unlock this code of fashionable wonder, I don’t know that many of those tips would do you any good. A lot of what makes an it-girl an it-girl isn’t about what brands she wears or the formula that she uses to put together looks. What makes an it-girl an it-girl is her ability to use style as a weapon in her personal world-dominating arsenal. It-girls use style as a tool and a platform for their individuality and spirit; they don’t look at it as a set of fashion dos and don’ts.

Since that’s what makes an it-girl who she is, there isn’t really any way to tell how to become one. However, there are a few tips I can give you on how to dress like one. These guidelines are just simple ways to amp up your wardrobe and your looks that emulate the style of an it-girl’s.

1. Invest in quality

I seriously cannot stress this enough. One of the best things you can do for your wardrobe is to invest in quality pieces. I mentioned in a previous post about things you should invest in that major pieces like outerwear, shoes, denim, and basics should be things you invest in. Putting more money into higher quality pieces ensures that your entire look looks more high end and it also ensures that your pieces last ten times longer. A pair of jeans from Forever 21 look cheap and last a few months versus a pair of jeans from Current/Elliot that will last you years and wear nicer over time. It may hurt your soul a little to shell out extra cash for higher quality pieces but those pieces are what make or break a look.

2. Add personality

One thing that separates it-girls from normal people is their personality. Cara Delevingne for example brings personality into every look she wears. Her laid back, cool-girl tomboy essence shines through even if she’s wearing couture. Make elements of your look your signature. Adding personality into your looks adds the extra oomph that separates you from the rest of the people who are wearing the same outfit as you. Taylor Swift shops at ASOS just as much as the next girl but what makes her an it-girl is when she adds personality to the look, like with her signature red lip.

3. Build off of classics

This tip is one that is easily forgotten. When you’re scanning street style posts and looking at photos of it-girls it may seem like you need to be a vintage queen or collector of couture but that’s not necessarily true. While adding eccentric pieces like vintage finds or expensive designer duds can make your look that much more cool, that isn’t necessarily the correct formula to follow. It-girls tend to use classic pieces like leather jackets, dark wash denim, blazers, or button ups to build the foundation of their look.  Classic pieces are a good way to make sure that you have a functional wardrobe that is also fashionable, which is what a lot of it-girls utilize. Instead of purchasing a whole new wardrobe when new trends roll around, it-girls adopt trends subtly and add them to their already classic and clean looks.

4. Adopt trends rather than rigidly following

For people who aren’t sure how to go about rocking new trends, this tip is for you. Sometimes when a new batch of trends comes around, it is easy to get lost in them all. You want to try everything and live by those trends, but since most trends originate on the runway, they are hard to translate to everyday wear. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is trying a trend as-is or as they had seen exactly on someone else. However, trends don’t always lend themselves easily to everybody, which is why adopting trends to fit your style and lifestyle is the way to go. Find trends you like and want to emulate and incorporate it subtly into your wardrobe. For example, fringe is a huge trend, so instead of buying a dress lined in fringe, incorporate the trend with something like a bucket bag with fringe detailing or a pair of booties with fringe. Adopting trends will allow you to look like an it-girl without going trend crazy.

5. Work it with confidence

Like I said at the beginning, what makes an it-girl an it-girl isn’t necessarily the contents of her wardrobe. Although, amazing wardrobes help, what makes an it-girl who she is, is the way she holds herself. When dressing like an it-girl, walk with confidence because not only will it make you feel good, other people will notice your confidence as well. Confidence isn’t a tangible piece of clothing, but it is just as essential to your look as a pair of Rag & Bone booties.

There you have it kids, my tips on how to dress like an it-girl. We can all dress amongst the ranks of Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo.

  1. Brilliant post! I think the point about personality and confidence is so true. You can wear the same outfit as someone else but can look entirely different if you just show a bit of confidence.
